Havant dialysis team get a good rating from the CQC

Nurses from a satellite dialysis unit of Queen Alexandra Hospital are celebrating after an inspection rated its service as good.

A team of inspectors from the Care Quality Commission (CQC) carried out an unannounced inspection in August at the Havant Renal Unit, at Langstone Gate.

The unit, which was opened in June 2020 and is operated by Diaverum UK Limited on behalf of Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust, provides a dialysis service for local people with chronic kidney disease.

The report found:

· Staff had training in key skills, understood how to protect patients from abuse, and managed safety well.

· Good care and treatment was provided by staff who gave patients enough to eat and drink, and gave them pain relief when they needed it.

· Staff worked well together for the benefit of patients, advised them on how to lead healthier lives, supported them to make decisions about their care, and had access to good information. Key services were available to suit patients' needs.

· Patients were treated with compassion and kindness, staff respected their privacy and dignity, took account of their individual needs, and helped them understand their conditions. They provided emotional support to patients, families and carers.

· The service planned care to meet the needs of local people, took account of patients’ individual needs, and made it easy for people to give feedback. People could access the service when they needed it and did not have to wait too long for treatment.

Natalie Borman, divisional director for networked services and consultant nephrologist at Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust, said: ‘An amazing well done to our team at the Havant Renal Unit for this good rating! Dialysis units in the community play such an important role in providing life-saving treatment for patients with chronic kidney disease.

‘I am so pleased that the hard work of all our teams and their commitment to improving for our patients has been recognised. There is much to be proud of and celebrate in the inspection report and I would like to thank our teams who have worked so hard to achieve this.’
